My Journey as a Video Production Intern at Skillman Video Group

For the past three months, Deane and I have had the incredible opportunity to work as video production interns at Skillman Video Group (SVG).

Working alongside SVG founder Christina Skillman and the dedicated team has been an enriching experience.

During this internship, I’ve gained invaluable insights into SEO, video content optimization, and the intricacies of professional video production and online video marketing. As a graduating college senior, this real-world experience has been incredibly valuable.

Learning the Ropes of Professional Video Production

As an intern, I have been immersed in the world of professional video production. From the outset, I was involved in various projects that enhanced my understanding of the field. I learned about the importance of SEO and how to optimize video content to reach a wider audience. This internship has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the online video marketing world, a crucial skill set in today’s digital age.

Academic Background and Interests

This spring, I will be graduating from Emmanuel College with a degree in English, Communications, and Media Studies, along with a minor in Writing. Throughout my time at Emmanuel, I participated in numerous community service projects and spirituality groups, and I was elected the Social Media and Creative Content Editor for the student-run online news source. Despite my interest in professional video production, I struggled to find connections with Boston videographers on campus. That’s when SVG came into my life.

Finding the Perfect Internship

I discovered the advertisement for a fall video production internship with Skillman Video Group on the Boston Craigslist page. SVG was looking for an intern to write content for their blog and attend video shoots to learn more about the corporate video production process. I applied immediately, and after a successful interview with Christina, I was hired. This internship was exactly what I had been looking for!

Writing and Learning Through Blog Posts

During my internship, I wrote numerous blog posts for the Skillman Video Group site, covering a variety of subjects. The research involved in writing these posts taught me a lot, and speaking with Boston videographers during shoots provided practical insights. Everything I learned on set and during our weekly meetings with Christina proved invaluable, especially when Deane and I were tasked with creating our own video for the SVG website.

Creating Our Own Video Project

Deane and I used our experience in corporate video production to plan, shoot, and edit our own scary movie trailer parody on our iPhones. This project was a hands-on learning experience that taught me a lot about the video production process and about myself. I discovered that I enjoy the planning and organizing side of video production more than the acting and performing side. This project was a testament to the skills and knowledge we had gained throughout the internship.

Growing as a Content Creator

One of the most important lessons I learned at SVG was how to generate content efficiently for marketing purposes. Initially, I felt the need to spend a lot of time editing and outlining my writing. However, the quick deadlines and multiple assignments taught me that I could produce well-written pieces in just a few days. I also learned to adjust my naturally formal and academic writing style to a more personal voice, thanks to the guidance of Christina, Deane, and Nicolette.

The Value of Real-World Experience

This internship has been a rich and rewarding experience due to the connections and real-world situations I encountered, which I would not have experienced in a classroom or on campus. I highly recommend that anyone interested in professional video production consider interning as a production assistant, and Skillman Video Group is an excellent place to start.
