From Concept to Creation: An Intern’s Adventure in Video Production
Collaborating with a Pro
The interns at Skillman Video Group have been tasked with creating our own video for SVG.
Over the past few months, we’ve worked closely with Christina Skillman, learning the ropes of professional video production.
Now, it’s time to showcase all that we’ve learned!

The Importance of Planning
As we’ve been taught throughout our internship, a great video starts with great planning. Preparing and brainstorming for each video shoot is crucial.
For this particular project, it was up to interns Deane Sullivan and Anna Topping, with Christina Skillman’s guidance, to bring our ideas to life.
Let’s delve into the pre-production process for our video project.
Defining the Goal
Whether it’s a training video or an online advertisement, understanding the overall goal is key. What are we trying to accomplish?
We sat down and worked on defining the goal of our video, just like SVG does with its clients.
For this internship assignment, we decided that the goal was to highlight the benefits of working with a professional video production company.
Crafting the Concept
With our goal in mind, we brainstormed ideas and decided to create a fake movie trailer. The storyline revolves around two people who posted an online video without taking the correct steps, and their lack of experience comes back to haunt them. This concept allowed us to humorously illustrate the importance of professional video production, aligning perfectly with our theme.
Simplified Filming
To emphasize the difference between amateur and professional video production, we chose to film with iPhones and minimal equipment. This choice underscored the theme of our project—showing how easy it is for anyone to make videos on their phones, but also highlighting the superior quality that professionals bring to the table.
Detailed Planning
A significant part of our preparation involved addressing the logistics of the shoot.
We asked ourselves critical questions: Where would we be shooting? What times during the day would provide the best natural light? How would we film each shot to effectively communicate our message?
Answering these questions required a well-thought-out itinerary. We selected specific dates, times, and locations to ensure a smooth production process.
The Shoot
With all the planning, scriptwriting, preparation, and location scouting completed, we felt confident as we headed into the shoot. Filming involved multiple takes to get each shot just right.
Despite using iPhones, we aimed to maintain a level of professionalism in our approach, ensuring that our final product would be both entertaining and informative.
Looking Forward to Post-Production
We are excited to share more about our shooting experiences once we wrap up production next week.
Following the shoot, we will enter the world of post-production, where editing will further enhance the look and theme of our video. This stage is crucial for refining our footage and ensuring that our message is clear and engaging.
Final Thoughts
This project has been a significant learning experience, pushing us to apply the skills we’ve acquired during our internship. We’re eager to see the final product and proud of the effort we’ve put into making it a success.
Stay tuned for the completed video, which promises to be both a humorous take on amateur video production and a testament to the value of working with professionals like SVG.
